The Thinner the Steel Frame, the Harder the Screw Is to Design

Many people assume that thinner steel is easier to drill into, so the fastening process should also be easier.

However, for self-drilling screws, drilling through the steel is only the first step. The real challenge is whether the screw can hold securely.

Why Is Thin Steel More Likely to Strip?

When a screw is driven into thicker steel, more material is available for the threads to engage with, creating stronger and more complete thread contact.

The thinner the steel, the less material is available for thread engagement. If the drilled hole is too large, the thread design is unsuitable, or the screw is slightly overdriven, stripping and spinning can easily occur.

Common problems with thin steel include:

  • The screw drills through but does not tighten securely
  • The screw feels tight at first but strips after a slight additional turn
  • The screw appears fully installed, but the actual holding strength is insufficient
  • Fastening results vary significantly between different installers

Simply Making the Thread Larger Is Not the Solution

Improving fastening performance in thin steel is not as simple as making the threads larger or deeper.

The drill point diameter, thread pitch, thread profile, and major diameter must all work together. The screw must drill smoothly while allowing the limited steel thickness to form sufficient thread engagement and maintain a reasonable resistance to overdriving.

This is the true challenge of designing screws for thin steel:

They must drive quickly, hold securely, and still provide enough tolerance during installation.

Jun Fastener Is Developing a New Thread Design

As construction materials continue to become lighter, thinner steel is being used more widely, creating new challenges for traditional screw designs.

Jun Fastener is currently developing a new thread design specifically for thin-steel applications. The goal is to improve thread engagement, fastening consistency, and resistance to stripping caused by overdriving.

The thinner the steel, the more it tests the true capability of screw design.

Our new thread design is currently undergoing testing and optimization. Stay tuned.
